Table Tent from JB's Nightclub,
Las Vegas, NV - Summer 1973
|
In the spring of 1973, my best college buddy, Ken, and I traveled from Tucson to Las Vegas to celebrate my 21st birthday. I had such a great time, I decided to take summer school in Las Vegas.
As fate would have it, my favorite band, Tower of Power was having their breakout third album, Tower of Power. So Very Hard To Go was breaking into the TOP 20 Pop and R & B Singles charts and life was grand.
Then life got better... A local nightclub, JB's, was advertising Tower of Power and Cold Blood for concert dates. The table tent (shown right) is for Tower's second appearance that summer.
No wimpy 7:30pm showtimes. First show at midnight; second show at 2:30am.
I arrived extra early, and bounded up to the bar to engage Lenny Williams in conversation. He told me about the recording of Back To Oakland, and said I should expect to hear some of that, 'tonight.'
That first live concert in a 400-seat nightclub cemented my lifetime relationship with the music of Tower of Power. Through four decades of horn-driven soul, I've enjoyed every recording and live show.
No doubt you have your own musical relationship with Tower of Power. The purpose of this website is to rejuvenate those memories, help you rediscover some music, discover music that you may have overlooked along the way, and re-embrace the unique musical entity that is Tower of Power.
Please enjoy the journey,
